India hand West Indies humiliating defeat by an innings and 140 runs

India handed West Indies a whopping defeat in Ahmedabad on Wednesday, the third day of the first of a two-Test series, bundling them out to win by an inning and 140 runs.

West Indies, batting first,  scored 162 runs in the first inning. India declared when they reached 448 runs in the first inning, which turned out to be an unassailable lead, with valuable contributions with the bat from opener KL Rahul (100), wicket-keeper batter Dhruv Jurel (125) and seasoned all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja (104*).  

Jadeja, with the ball, then piled on the pressure, snatching four wickets in the second innings as India ran through the Windies batting for 146 runs.

Mohammed Siraj, with a four-wicket haul in the first innings, followed up with a  three-wicket haul  in the second.

For the West Indies, Alick Athanaze (38) and Justin Greaves (25) showed some resistance but were unable to snatch the momentum from India.

The win marked India’s  second consecutive victory in the ongoing World Test Championship cycle.

They  previously drew a five-match series 2-2 against England at The Oval.

India and West Indies will next face off in Delhi for the series decider starting October 10.
