Cricket West Indies (CWI) Director of Cricket Miles Bascombe has given assurance that the regional governing body’s cash-strapped situation will not adversely impact the U-19 team’s preparation for the World Cup in January 2026.
Bascombe gave the assurance at the CWI’s quarterly press conference held in Antigua last week Wednesday.
“They would have completed an under 19 international series against Sri Lanka, winning that series. And we have another series planned against England and potentially the USA in November. So they will have another at least seven international youth ODI matches in that series which should put them in a very good position heading into a World Cup in January,” Bascombe said.
The Director of Cricket reiterated that they were forced to make changes to next year’s tournaments because of financial challenges.
Speaking about cricket and players, he said CWI has “tried to ensure that there is enough cricket that we can have a good account of our player pool.”
“Players have enough time and opportunity to give a good account of themselves and make themselves eligible for selection to West Indies teams. We will work with the franchises and territorial boards to ensure that there is targeted training so that players can hit the ground running when they come to these tournaments as there will likely be very little time to take one or two or three matches to get up to speed” Basombe told reporters.
