Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves said Tuesday that there was no report of any Vincentian in Jamaica having been injured during the passage of Category 5 hurricane Melissa, the most powerful hurricane to have struck in the last 200 years.
Prime Minister Gonsalve updated Vincentians on the matter while addressing his Unity Labour Party’s political rally held at the Grammar School Playing Field on Tuesday night.
“I want to report today that I gave the Prime Minister of Jamaica, My friend Andrew Holness, the numbers of the student leaders from St Vincent and the Grenadines… And he has promised me that he will keep in touch with our students,” Gonsalves said.
Gonsalves said he spoke with the leader of the Vincentian Students Association in Jamaica, Nyah Bennett, who advised him that in relation to hurricane Melissa, that the worst had passed, and there had been “much damage and destruction but there had been no report thus far that any of our students, or nationals of St Vincent and the Grenadines has suffered any personal harm.”
Gonsalves said that linesmen from this country had been deployed to Jamaica ahead of the passage of the hurricane to assist with recovery efforts and the Jamaican Prime Minister has expressed gratitude for such assistance.
“He has thanked me for sending already to Jamaica some linesmen from St Vincent and the Grenadines to help with the recovery,” Gonsalves said.
“I want to say thanks to Almighty God for his many blessings. He is the controller of the universe. He knows all things. He sees all things. And we have sent our prayers up to him and we have taken precautions, and we have left the rest to him,” Gonsalves also said.
